Winning the Battle in Your Mind by Gary Steffes

So many of us believe lies about who we are.
We believe we are defined by our performance, our reputation, our past mistakes, our status, our wealth, etc. We look at ourselves and believe lies like:
•I am a sinner
•I am unworthy
•I am not good enough
•I am inadequate
•I am a failure
•I am a mistake
•I am a horrible Christian
•I am overlooked
•I am insignificant
•I am awkward
•I am ugly
•I am an embarrassment
•I am not gifted
•I am unforgivable
•I am not important
•I am weird
•I am not a leader
•I am exhausted
Consequently, as Competitors, the lies we believe become the lens through which we see life. For example, for much of my career, I believed the lie “I am not good enough.” Every time I underperformed in a game, or made a mistake that led to my coach being upset, or got moved off the power play, or sat in on a video session and others got celebrated instead of me, my first instinct was to reinforce the lie— “Man, I am just not good enough.” Because I saw the lie everywhere, it killed my confidence and led to increased anxiety, fear, and insecurity.
How do we find freedom? We renew our minds and stand in the truth!
Jesus said, “and you shall know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32). Notice, He didn’t say “might set you free,” or “will set you free only as long as you play well.” No, Jesus declared, the truth WILL set you free.
The Apostle Paul wrote to the church in Corinth, “For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:4-5 ). Notice, we are not in a power battle; we are in a truth battle. Jesus Christ has all power and authority. He is King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Rev. 19:16); He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6); every lie submits to Him. The lies create strongholds, but the weapons of our warfare have divine power to destroy them!
Freedom comes when we go on the offensive using the weapon that works—the Word of God, which is Truth (John 17:17). To win, we need more than a defense-only strategy. We must go vertical to the Power Source Himself, Jesus Christ, and let His Word sever the lies we are believing
So, you may ask “Where do I start?” Here are a few action steps that have changed my life personally.
Confidence is possible! No one is stuck! Let’s stand in the truth and WIN the week!

So, you may ask “Where do I start?” Here are a few action steps that have changed my life personally.
1. Start Your Day by Verbally Declaring Your Identity in Christ. This simple, ten-minute exercise will absolutely transform your life. Consistency is key. Little by little, the neuropathways in your brain will be rewired and you will start to see life through the lens of God’s promises, not your false beliefs.
2. Choose to Believe the Truth Regardless How You Feel. God’s Word is truth, and it endures forever (Psalm 119:160, John 17:17). However, due to past experiences and traumas, you may find it hard to believe the truth when you don’t feel like it is true. In these moments, you must choose to believe the truth regardless of how you feel. Truth is not truth because you feel it; truth is truth because God declared it; He is the Truth (John 14:6). Over time, your emotions will follow what you choose to believe.
3. Stop Speaking Lies About Yourself. As you fight to diligently renew your mind, resolve in your heart to stop speaking lies about yourself. Whether in casual conversation, or your personal self-talk, the words matter. You are moving forward now in truth, so refuse to let incorrect identity statements come out of your mouth.
Confidence is possible! No one is stuck! Let’s stand in the truth and WIN the week!
